    Heroes of Agricultural Innovation

    New technology has a prominent place in the theory and practice of innovation, but the association between high tech and innovation is not inevitable. In this paper, we discuss six metaphorical heroes of agricultural innovation, starting with the dominant hero of frontier science and technology. At first sight, our six heroes can be divided in those who are pro- and those who are anti-technology. Yet in the end technology, and more specifically GM technology, does not emerge as the main issue. Empowering the poor, finding solutions for urgent climate problems, and enhancing the quality of our daily relations to food and the environment – these are the issues the heroes are fighting for. Relations between innovation and (frontier) technology are better seen as a matter of pragmatic consideration, we will argue

    Spontaneous Ratchet Effect in a Granular Gas

    The spontaneous clustering of a vibrofluidized granular gas is employed to generate directed transport in two different compartmentalized systems: a "granular fountain" in which the transport takes the form of convection rolls, and a "granular ratchet" with a spontaneous particle current perpendicular to the direction of energy input. In both instances, transport is not due to any system-intrinsic anisotropy, but arises as a spontaneous collective symmetry breaking effect of many interacting granular particles.     Emerging profiles for cultured meat; ethics through and as design

    The development of cultured meat has gained urgency through the increasing problems associated with meat, but what it might become is still open in many respects. In existing debates, two main moral profiles can be distinguished. Vegetarians and vegans who embrace cultured meat emphasize how it could contribute to the diminishment of animal suffering and exploitation, while in a more mainstream profile cultured meat helps to keep meat eating sustainable and affordable. In this paper we argue that these profiles do not exhaust the options and that (gut) feelings as well as imagination are needed to explore possible future options. On the basis of workshops, we present a third moral profile, “the pig in the backyard”. Here cultured meat is imagined as an element of a hybrid community of humans and animals that would allow for both the consumption of animal protein and meaningful relations with domestic (farm) animals. Experience in the workshops and elsewhere also illustrates that thinking about cultured meat inspires new thoughts on “normal” meat. In short, the idea of cultured meat opens up new search space in various ways. We suggest that ethics can take an active part in these searches, by fostering a process that integrates (gut) feelings, imagination and rational thought and that expands the range of our moral identities

    Maatschappelijke respons op nieuwe technologieën : een literatuuroverzicht ten behoeve van Kennisbasis VI onderzoek

    In dit rapport wordt een overzicht gegeven van de huidige stand van zaken op het gebied van onderzoek naar technologie en maatschappij met een focus op het werkveld van Wageningen UR, de levenswetenschappen. Er is in toenemende mate onderzoek gedaan naar de maatschappelijke aspecten van technologieontwikkeling. Er is vanuit veel verschillende disciplines onderzoek gedaan, maar daaruit is nog weinig synthese ontstaan. Zo is het maatschappelijk perspectief en het individueel perspectief op de interactie tussen technologie en maatschappij grotendeels los van elkaar ontwikkeld. Dat is vanuit wetenschappelijk oogpunt niet vreemd: specialisatie levert namelijk veel op. Discipline-overstijgende samenwerking is nodig om expertise daadwerkelijk te integreren. Een mogelijk risico van interdisciplinaire samenwerking is dat de resultaten niet goed in het peer-reviewed systeem gepubliceerd kunnen worden, ongeacht de uitkomsten. Andere vormen van output dienen daarom onderzocht en op waarde geschat te worden. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan boeken of populair-wetenschappelijke publicaties. Wageningen UR heeft naar verhouding een sterke traditie in syntheseonderzoek, onder andere in praktijkonderzoek, maar ook in vernieuwende wetenschapsgebieden als systeembiologie en complexe adaptieve systemen (CAS)

    Promise and ontological ambiguity in the In Vitro Meat imagescape: From laboratory myotubes to the cultured burger

    In vitro meat, also known as cultured meat, involves growing cells into muscle tissue to be eaten as food. The technology had its most high profile moment in 2013 when a cultured burger was cooked and tasted in a press conference. Images of the burger featured in the international media and were circulated across the internet. These images – literally marks on a two-dimension surface - do important work in establishing what in vitro meat is and what it can do. A combination of visual semiotics and narrative analysis shows that images of in vitro meat afford readings of their story that are co-created by the viewer. Before the cultured burger, during 2011, images of in vitro meat fell into four distinct categories: cell images, tissue images, flowcharts, and meat in a dish images. The narrative infrastructure of each image type affords different interpretations of what in vitro meat can accomplish and what it is. The 2013 cultured burger images both draw upon and depart from these images types in an attempt to present in vitro meat as a normal food stuff, and as ‘matter in place’ when placed on the plate. The analysis of individual images and the collection of images about a certain object or subject – known as the imagescape – is a productive approach to understanding the ontology and promise of in vitro meat and is applicable to other areas of social life

    Oscillatory instability in a driven granular gas

    We discovered an oscillatory instability in a system of inelastically colliding hard spheres, driven by two opposite "thermal" walls at zero gravity. The instability, predicted by a linear stability analysis of the equations of granular hydrodynamics, occurs when the inelasticity of particle collisions exceeds a critical value. Molecular dynamic simulations support the theory and show a stripe-shaped cluster moving back and forth in the middle of the box away from the driving walls. The oscillations are irregular but have a single dominating frequency that is close to the frequency at the instability onset, predicted from hydrodynamics.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Europhysics Letter

    Motion of condensates in non-Markovian zero-range dynamics

    Condensation transition in a non-Markovian zero-range process is studied in one and higher dimensions. In the mean-field approximation, corresponding to infinite range hopping, the model exhibits condensation with a stationary condensate, as in the Markovian case, but with a modified phase diagram. In the case of nearest-neighbor hopping, the condensate is found to drift by a "slinky" motion from one site to the next. The mechanism of the drift is explored numerically in detail. A modified model with nearest-neighbor hopping which allows exact calculation of the steady state is introduced. The steady state of this model is found to be a product measure, and the condensate is stationary.Comment: 31 pages, 9 figure
